Finding Inspiration in Every Turn
Each piece of wood with which I work is hand selected. I particularly enjoy working with burl wood and am drawn to distinctive wood that will reveal particularly interesting grain patterns. I source wood from local arborists, salvage from construction scrap heaps and forage in the forest. As a result, my pieces are truly one of a kind as unique wood grain patterns cannot be replicated and certain wood types are rare with limited availability. In turning or hollowing the wood on my lathe, I allow “each shape to emerge” and enable the tree to tell its story through the finished form. My job is to simply highlight the unique grain patterns, colors, and textures the wood offers.
I create functional items such as bowls, vases, platters, tableware, as well as free form art.
The image above is a nested cherry wood burl. This set was cored from a single, cherry wood burl salvaged in New Hampshire. The individual pieces were each hand finished on the lathe into a winged shape featuring retained live bark edges. The largest measures 15" on the long side, the smallest 5".

Maple Burl | Maple Burl | Large YewThis piece was turned from English Yew Wood. The wood was salvaged from an arborist in Long Island, New York and it showcases the dramatic color and grain patterns present in Yew wood. I turned turned this piece “green” which allows for movement of the wood. This gives a magical quality to the piece as the wood is dictating its final shape. The bowl measures over 13” in diameter. |

Cherry TrioI turned this trio of winged bowls from a salvaged Cherry Burl. A burl forms on a tree from unsprouted bud tissue and appears as a knobby outgrowth of a tree trunk or base. Burls are rare, and they deliver extraordinary grain patterns as can be seen with these pieces. This trio was cored from a single burl, allowing you to see the symmetry of the grain pattern between the sibling pieces. Each was hand-finished on the lathe, and I retained the bark and natural edge. | Walnut Platter | Cherry Wood Burl Vessel |

A burl forms on a tree from unsprouted bud tissue and appears as a knobby outgrowth of a tree trunk or base. Burls are rare, and they deliver extraordinary grain patterns as can be seen with this piece. A one-of-a-kind rarity, this piece showcases the spectacular color and grain of a Redwood tree aged well over 1,000 years. |
